However, the one difference is that the auxiliary cable uses analog connection rather than digital, and connecting your soundbar to your TV using a analog won’t produce sound quite as good. It’s what people typically used back when wireless streaming wasn’t available. (Need a guide more specific to a brand? Check how to set up iLive soundbars next.)Ĭompared to previous connectivity options, the auxiliary cable is a more conventional way to connect devices. Just select your device name and wait for audio pairing. This is usually done on the audio source device. You may not know the label (or the name of your device) outright, but most of the time it follows the model number or brand name.Īfter you have “discovered” your unit, you can then join the two devices together. Once that’s done, you can then search for the device name on your TV. This means that when you search for your device with other Bluetooth-enabled devices, you can find it. Plus, you won’t need to double-check if you have wires included in the box because Bluetooth is actually built right into your device.īefore you try to hook up your device to your TV, you need to make it “discoverable”. That’s one of the frustrating parts of any wired setup, especially if your TV stand is closer to the floor. One of the best things about Bluetooth connection is it won’t require you to search on your hands and knees for the correct input. It’s an easy connection method without unsightly cables that clutter your interior setup. If cables are too messy for you, you can actually go wireless with Bluetooth. For a one source control of your devices, you can aslo try connecting them with an HDMI CEC. Overall, this is a good way to connect any external device to your TV, not just your soundbar. This should successfully connect your soundbar to your TV via optical digital audio. Once your soundbar and TV are on, select the source button on the remote or the side of the soundbar and then press D.IN. After you have double-checked the cable connection, it’s time to switch on both devices. M ake sure you push the optical cable all the way in on both ends so the audio won’t suffer any loss of quality. The next step is to take the other end of the digital optical cable and plug it into your soundbar’s digital audio “in”. Most excellent soundbar devices should have it already so it’s not likely that you’ll have to purchase one yourself.įind the labeled plug accordingly on the back of your TV and plug one end of the cable in the digital audio “out”. Similar to connecting the HDMI cable, the digital optical cable should also come in the box. This ensures that the connection was successful. If you have a remote, you need to press the source button then select D.IN. The HDMI port on the back of your soundbar is called the “in port” and the one located on the back of your TV is the “out port”. Then, you need to take the other end of the cable and connect it to your device (your TV). Once you plug it in, you need to make sure it’s a tight fit so no technical issues would arise. Then again, this particular cable is among the cheapest in the market so it won’t set you back too much. If you don’t have the HDMI audio return channel cable, you may need to purchase your own. It will be labeled on most soundbars, so you won’t have a hard time figuring out which one it is.Īssuming that the HDMI cable with the ideal length came in the box with your purchase, you can easily connect the soundbar to your TV via the HDMI port – but more on this later. You will find HDMI Arc port on most top Dolby Atmos soundbars, as well. You will find the HDMI ARC port at the back of your soundbar. The HW-J450 from Samsung is an example of a soundbar with this capability. If the soundbar has an HDMI ARC (audio return channel) capability, you should go for that compared to other connectivity options. Connecting your soundbar to your TV with the right audio cable is crucial for the two to work seamlessly together. In the Geekbench 3 test, the Fire HD 10 outmatched the Fire HD 8’s single-core performance by over 150%, with a whopping multi-core increase of 235%. Overall, it felt remarkably snappy and responsive in day-to-day use with fast boot-up times and speedy app switching.Īs for benchmark numbers, I can compare the HD 10 with the cheaper Fire HD 8, which launched last year and uses a weaker MediaTek MT8168 chipset. Unfortunately, the Geekbench 3 test failed to run on the previous model – which is the only version of Geekbench on the Amazon App store – so I wasn’t able to directly compare the performance between the two, but suffice to say the 2021 version is a surprisingly rapid low-cost tablet. The screen’s maximum brightness has increased slightly this year, with a measured peak luminance of 498cd/m2, up from the 398cd/m2 we measured on last year’s model. It still measures 10.1in from corner to corner, and has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 with a pixel density of 224ppi. Like the recent Fire HD 8 re-do, the Fire HD 10’s IPS display remains largely unchanged from the previous version. Video quality is very noisy and lacks detail. The 5MP rear-facing camera and 2MP selfie snapper both have a maximum video resolution of 720p, and neither is anything special. I can’t say the same about the Fire HD 10’s cameras. There’s more than enough volume, with only a hint of tinniness at the high end, and there’s a surprising amount of bass, too. On that note, while you can’t expect much in the way of audio panache from a budget tablet, the Fire HD 10’s stereo speakers sounded quite good in my tests. The tablet’s Dolby Atmos integrated dual speakers are situated on the top edge. The tablet’s ports and buttons are all located on the right edge when held in landscape orientation, with a volume rocker sitting above the Fire HD 10’s power button, USB-C charging port and 3.5mm audio jack. It’s available in black, green, lavender or blue.Įlsewhere, it’s a pretty standard affair. Since it’s so cheap, you can’t really expect the Fire HD 10 to outdo the iPad in the design stakes, but for the most part, it’s absolutely fine, and it’s nice that you get a choice of colours, too. It’s a big slab of plastic and glass, with thick 15mm screen-bordering bezels and neatly rounded corners. If you’ve seen one Fire tablet, you’ve seen them all and the Amazon Fire HD 10 does nothing to dispel this notion. Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review: Design, key features and Dolby Atmos If you don’t mind taking a substantial hit in terms of specifications, design and features, then the Fire HD 8 is the next tablet down the list and starts at £90, while the Fire 7 costs even less at just £50. There’s also Huawei’s MatePad lineup of tablets to contend with but, since they don’t run the full version of Android – with a sorely limited app store and lack of security updates – they aren’t worth buying at this time. Perhaps the most affordable 10in Samsung tablet (which we’ve reviewed) is the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, which costs £285. What about Android alternatives, I hear you cry? Alas, the market for big-screened Android tablets is no longer what it once was and serious alternatives can only really be found coming out of Samsung’s factories these days. Apple’s entry-level iPad – currently in its eighth iteration with the latest model released in 2019 – starts at £329. There’s also a new “ Productivity Bundle” available for each tablet, which includes a new detachable keyboard case (sadly this wasn’t supplied for review) and a 12-month Microsoft 365 subscription for an extra £60.Īt those prices, it’s no surprise that the low-cost Fire HD 10 finds itself in a league of its own. At these prices, they come with lock screen adverts, with Amazon charging an extra £10 to remove them. The Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 10 Plus cost £150 and £180 respectively for the models with 32GB of storage, while the models with 64GB of storage cost £190 and £220. Just like the egg cartons, they will compost, and the plants will already be off to a great start. When the time is right, plant them outside – toilet paper roll and all. Since the bottoms are open, they already have a natural way of draining water. All you have to do is cut your toilet paper rolls in half and place them all tightly on a tray and fill with soil. Toilet paper rolls – Everyone uses toilet paper, and these little paper tubs are the perfect size for seed planting. Once the seeds have sprouted, divide the carton into individual cells and plant, cardboard cells and all. You can grow more than one plant in there.Įgg cartons – The best part about using egg cartons is that, since they are bio-degradable and compostable, they can be transferred along with the seedling right into the ground/soil/pot. Fill each cell in the carton with soil and plant a few seeds in each one. Old milk or juice cartons – Lay the carton on its side and remove one of the long sides. Just be sure to make a couple of drainage holes in the bottom of each cup. Old yogurt cups – On the occasion my kids get individual servings of yogurt, I would save the empty cups to use for crafts. Also, my kids absolutely love the whole journey of planting a seed, watching it grow and nurturing it until we have herbs, fruit and vegetables that we’ll harvest. Plus, your budget will go much further than if you had to buy seedlings. It’s the only really safe way to know it’s all organic. You will know which seeds are being planted, and in what kinds of soil and fertilizer. Growing plants from your own seeds puts all the control into your hands and will save you lots of money. Instead of wasting money and creating more trash, I suggest inventing your own seeds pots. I like to plant my seeds in recycled household items instead of store bought plastic trays and soil blocks or even pots. I have spoken many times about the impact that cloud computing, in all its forms, is having on the industry. I believe they are well on their way to becoming a public company at some point in the not too distant future. Paul and I are very happy with the progress Rob has made in the short time he has been CEO and Pivotal is making great strides in the marketplace. Pivotal will continue to operate as it has with Rob Mee as CEO and Paul Maritz as Executive Chairman. We estimate that these revenue synergies could top $1B over the next few years. Together, Dell and VMware will have the opportunity to significantly expand VMware’s revenues in the areas such as the software-defined data center, hybrid cloud and end user computing. We see significant synergies between Dell and our Federation companies, especially VMware, which will continue to operate as a public company led by Pat Gelsinger. The EMC Federation has created great momentum in the market place which we expect to accelerate. We are very excited by this opportunity, while being able to reward our EMC shareholders in such an attractive way. The new company will have more freedom to invest for the long-term, an increased focus on our customers and, very importantly, the ability to attract and retain the best and brightest people. The combined company will be far more efficient and effective to operate as a private company, giving us the ability to incubate and develop new products and solutions necessary to capitalize on the opportunities I just mentioned. Additionally, it brings together strong capabilities in the hottest IT trends, including digital transformation, the software-defined data center, hybrid cloud, converged infrastructure, mobile and security. It will have complementary product portfolios, expanded market reach, and four of the world’s greatest technology franchises: servers, storage, virtualization and PCs. The combined company will be a leader in a number of the most attractive high-growth areas of the $2 trillion information technology market. The coming together of EMC and Dell will create a powerhouse in the technology industry with more than $80B in revenue. To keep us growing and thriving through the truly historic changes that are gripping our industry, and to help assure we capitalize on the vast opportunity before us, we decided that creating a new company with Michael Dell, an industry colleague and noted leader, and the team at Silver Lake is the best way to position EMC for success going forward. And now we are entering a new era, where the entire information technology industry is experiencing massive disruption, while simultaneously being presented with unprecedented opportunity. An incredible feat! During that period, we have seen good times, tough times, and yes even great times. In the past 25 years, we have transformed from a storage start-up to a global technology leader with more than 70,000 people. Today is a remarkable day in EMC’s history. And I thank our valued customers for their trust, business, and friendship.īut I also recognize the need for change, and size, coupled with focus of mission, and capabilities, matter! I believe that this transaction will put EMC and our terrific people in the best position possible to thrive in the new world order. I owe each one of them an incredible debt of gratitude. I love our people and the culture we have built. It has been a journey that I wouldn’t have traded for anything. I am incredibly proud of the business we have built here at EMC. Let’s explore these two popular compression formats and analyze their key differences. If you’ve ever found yourself in a quandary over which file format to use, I can assure you, you’re not alone. Let’s assume you have two folders, myFolder1 and myFolder2, that you want to compress into a single XZ file.įirstly, you would use the tar command to bundle these folders together. This process mirrors the steps we’ve already discussed, with a minor tweak. With Linux, you can take the power of compression even further by compressing multiple folders into a single XZ file. To check if xz-utils is installed on your system, open your terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T is your friend here!) and type:Ĭompressing multiple folders to an XZ file in Linux I personally appreciate xz-utils for its efficiency and simplicity, but admittedly, I sometimes wish it had a progress bar, which can be handy for larger files. It is typically preinstalled on many Linux distributions. The most common tool for this task is xz-utils. To unzip XZ files in Linux, we need a tool that can handle the LZMA/LZMA2 compression. That’s a trade-off I’m willing to make, especially when I need to squeeze every last bit of space out of my precious SSD. But in my personal experience, XZ offers a better compression ratio, although it can be slightly slower. rar that you might be more familiar with. Don’t let the technical jargon intimidate you! For nearly 15 years, he has attended to patients at James Paget University Hospital, the largest hospital in Great Yarmouth. Mr Craig Goldsmith is a renowned consultant ophthalmologist in Great Yarmouth, who specialises in small incision cataract surgery, retinal surgery, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, virectomy and intravitreal therapies. If you are concerned about a macular hole or any other eye condition, please don’t hesitate to book a consultation with Mr Craig Goldsmith via his Top Doctors profile today. Patients will be able to notice the gas bubble shrinking in the weeks following the surgery and will know when the bubble has been completely absorbed. This is extremely important, as the gas bubble can expand with altitude, causing severe pain and permanent blindness. It is also recommended that patients refrain from flying until the gas bubble has absorbed, which can take from three to twelve weeks depending on the type of gas used. Your doctor will tell you if this is necessary, and for how long you will have to stay in this position. Most patients will have to stay home from work for 2 weeks, as the gas bubble in the eye can affect your vision, and distort your depth perception. Some patients will have to stay in a face-down recovery position after the surgery. After the surgery, there will be a gas bubble in your eye. In most cases, you can go home the same day as the operation. What is the recovery period of the surgery like? If the high pressure does not subside after a few days, there is a risk of damage to the optic nerve. This usually subsides after a few days, and symptoms can be improved with eye drops or medication. This can be treated with further surgery, although in some cases it can cause blindness.Ī more common complication is raised pressure within the eye. As cataracts are inevitable, patients are sometimes offered a combined vitrectomy and cataract extraction surgery in one procedure.Īnother possible complication of vitrectomy is retinal detachment. This is a serious complication, in which the retina detaches from the back of the eye. If the patient undergoing macular hole surgery has not previously undergone cataract surgery, cataracts will almost certainly appear after a vitrectomy. Both can lead to blindness if left untreated.Īnother much more common complication of macular hole surgery is cataracts, which cause a cloudy lens. Although both of these complications don’t happen very often, they are very serious. Another rare complication is bleeding in the eye. One of the risks is an infection in the eye, even though this is considered very rare. Are there any risks to macular hole surgery?Īs with any surgery, there is a risk to vitrectomy procedures. The surgery is usually done as a day case, meaning patients can go home the same day after the surgery. Depending on several factors, it can be done either under local or general anaesthetic. The surgery usually takes around twenty to thirty minutes. However, vision rarely returns to normal levels. The vision is stabilised, with less visual distortion and they can see much better in eye tests. It will close the hole completely in over ninety per cent of cases.Įven if the hole is not completely closed, many patients report a positive change in their vision after vitrectomy. When done to treat a macular hole, vitrectomy has highly successful results, especially if it is done within the first few weeks of the macular hole appearing. This procedure is used to treat several different eye conditions. This is a procedure in which the vitreous fluid in the eye is removed by a surgeon and replaced with another fluid. Macular holes are treated with a vitrectomy. There are some other possible causes too: a previous retinal detachment, trauma to the eye, and short-sightedness. It is also more common in long-sighted people. They commonly occur in people over 60 years of age and are more common in women than in men. Nobody is sure what causes macular holes. Some people also experience a small circle of missing vision right in the centre.Ī macular hole is not the same as age-related macular degeneration, although in some cases people can have both macular conditions in the same eye concurrently. The symptoms of macular holes include blurry vision, and distortion when looking at straight lines or letters. In our latest article, renowned consultant ophthalmologist Mr Craig Goldsmith answers the most frequently asked questions regarding this condition.Ī macular hole is an eye condition in which a hole or gap develops in the centre of the retina. A macular hole is an eye condition that can cause blindness if left untreated. |
